| | FRA GERUSALEMME E BETLEMME: QUI SI RIPOSO’ MARIA (Gennaio 1998) Sono stati recentemente ritrovati in Terra Santa, i resti della chiesa bizantina del IV secolo dove, secondo la tradizione, si fermò la Vergine diretta a Betlemme. Antiche tradizioni orali riprese dai vangeli apocrifi raccontano infatti che Maria si riposò qui, prima di partorire Gesù. Basandosi sui testi sacri e sulle testimonianze dei pellegrini, ma ancor più, aiutati dai bulldozer impiegati per la costruzione della nuova provinciale per Betlemme, nel 1992, alcuni archeologi israeliani sono giunti fin da allora alla certezza del ritrovamento del luogo. Le prime case di Betlemme sono ad un paio di chilometri e di fronte al punto indicato dagli ultimi scavi, si trova la contestata altura di Har Choma, dove l’avvio della costruzione di un nuovo insediamento ebraico, ha provocato il blocco del processo di pace con i Palestinesi lo scorso marzo. Sono stati proprio i lavori di allacciamento idrico ad aver portato alla luce i resti della chiesa. Si è dovuto scavare quasi un metro per trovare il centro dell’edificio dove è situata la pietra sacra del Kathisma (letteralmente «posto a sedere»), sulla quale Maria avrebbe riposato prima di ripartire per la grotta della Natività. La chiesa era molto grande, di struttura ottagonale, larga 43 metri e lunga 52; presentava al centro un colonnato anulare, all’interno del quale si trovava la pietra: tale struttura serviva ai pellegrini per pregare girando attorno ad essa. Restano controverse le vicende che condussero alla distruzione di questo luogo: forse venne rasa al suolo nel 1009, ai tempi dello sceicco Al–Hakim, uno dei più intolleranti capi islamici, che distrusse la maggioranza delle strutture religiose cristiane, compresa la Basilica del Santo Sepolcro. Cominciano ora le file per una burocratica autorizzazione per preservare questo luogo da eventuali sciacallaggi. Una Comissione di studiosi delle Chiese Riformate, si è unita con entusiamsmo all'invito della Chiesa in Gerusalemme per poter avanzare insieme su questa strada, vedendo in Maria e in questo studio archeologico una fonte di unione. |

| | Anglicani a Lourdes (Gennaio 1998) La Grotta di Massabielle ha ricevuto in agosto un pellegrinaggio della Chiesa Anglicana. Si trattava di tre parrocchie che si definiscono «anglo-cattoliche», ovvero eredi del movimento di Oxford, fondato nell’Ottocento da Henry Newman; oggi la loro permanenza nella comunione anglicana è resa difficile, dato che non accettano le ultime decisioni di quell’episcopato che autorizza l’ordinazione sacerdotale delle donne. Per tale motivo le tre parrocchie sono rette da «visitatori» nominati dalla stessa Regina. In occasione del pellegrinaggio è stato ricordato il legame tra la devozione allo Scapolare carmelitano, sorto in Inghilterra, e Lourdes, la cui ultima apparizione è avvenuta il 16 luglio, festa della Madonna del Carmine.
