Pope Benedict XVI leads a mass for the African Synod in St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican October 4, 2009.

Bishops enter St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, to attend a mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI for the opening of the synod on Africa, a three-week gathering of some 300 prelates to discuss the church's problems on the continent. The Pontiff praised Africa's rich cultural and spiritual treasures, saying they are the "spiritual lung'' for a world in a crisis of faith and hope. But he says Africa has also been afflicted by "toxic spiritual garbage'' exported by other countries: materialism and religious fundamentalism.
