Dear Young Friends,

“It is good for us to be here!” (Mt 17:4). These words were spoken by Saint Peter on Mount Tabor as he stood in the presence of Jesus transfigured in glory. Truly it is good for us to be here, together, at this shrine of the Korean Martyrs, in whom the Lord’s glory was revealed at the dawn of the Church’s life in this country. In this great assembly, which brings together young Christians from throughout Asia, we can almost feel the glory of Jesus present in our midst, present in his Church which embraces every nation, language and people, present in the power of his Holy Spirit who makes all things new, young and alive!

I thank you for your warm welcome. Very warm, very warm! And I thank for the gift of your enthusiasm, your joyful songs, your testimonies of faith, and your beautiful expressions of the variety and richness of your different cultures. In a special way, I thank Mai, Giovanni e Marina, the three young people who shared with me your hopes, your problems and your concerns; I listened to them carefully, and I will keep them in mind. I thank Bishop Lazzaro You Heung-sik for his words of introduction and I greet all of you from my heart.

This afternoon I would like to reflect with you on part of the theme of this Sixth Asian Youth Day: “The Glory of the Martyrs Shines on You”. Just as the Lord made his glory shine forth in the heroic witness of the martyrs, so too he wants to make his glory shine in your lives, and through you, to light up the life of this vast continent. Today Christ is knocking at the door of your heart, of my heart. He calls you and me to rise, to be wide awake and alert, and to see the things in the life that really matter. What is more, he is asking you and me to go out on the highways and byways of this world, knocking on the doors of other people’s hearts, inviting them to welcome him into their lives.

This great gathering of Asian young people also allows us to see something of what the Church herself is meant to be in God’s eternal plan. Together with young people everywhere, you want to help build a world where we all live together in peace and friendship, overcoming barriers, healing divisions, rejecting violence and prejudice. And this is exactly what God wants for us. The Church is meant to be a seed of unity for the whole human family. In Christ, all nations and peoples are called to a unity which does not destroy diversity but acknowledges, reconciles and enriches it.

How distant the spirit of the world seems from that magnificent vision and plan! How often the seeds of goodness and hope which we try to sow seem to be choked by weeds of selfishness, hostility and injustice, not only all around us, but also in our own hearts. We are troubled by the growing gap in our societies between rich and poor. We see signs of an idolatry of wealth, power and pleasure which come at a high cost to human lives. Closer to home, so many of our own friends and contemporaries, even in the midst of immense material prosperity, are suffering from spiritual poverty, loneliness and quiet despair. God seems to be removed from the picture. It is almost as though a spiritual desert is beginning to spread throughout our world. It affects the young too, robbing them of hope and even, in all too many cases, of life itself.

Yet this is the world into which you are called to go forth and bear witness to the Gospel of hope, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and the promise of his Kingdom - this is your theme, Marina. I will speak… In the parables, Jesus tells us that the Kingdom comes into the world quietly, growing silently yet surely wherever it is welcomed by hearts open to its message of hope and salvation. The Gospel teaches us that the Spirit of Jesus can bring new life to every human heart and can transform every situation, even the most apparently hopeless. Jesus can transform, can transform all situations! This is the message which you are called to share with your contemporaries: at school, in the workplace, in your families, your universities and your communities. Because Jesus rose from the dead, we know that he has “the words of eternal life” (Jn 6:68), that his word has the power to touch every heart, to conquer evil with good, and to change and redeem the world.

Dear young friends, in this generation the Lord is counting on you! He’s counting on you! He entered your hearts on the day of your Baptism; he gave you his Spirit on the day of your Confirmation; and he strengthens you constantly by his presence in the Eucharist, so that you can be his witnesses before the world. Are you ready to say “yes”? Are you ready? [Yes!]

Thank you! Are you tired? [No!] Sure? [Yes!] Beloved friends of mine, as I was told yesterday: “You cannot speak to the young with paper; you must speak, address young people spontaneously from the heart”. But I have a great difficulty: I have poor English. [No!] Yes, yes! But if you wish I can say other things spontaneously… [Yes!] Are you tired? [No!] May I go on? [Yes!] But I will do so in Italian. [turning to the interpreter] Will you translate? Thank you! Go on!

Ho sentito molto forte quello che Marina ha detto: il suo conflitto nella sua vita. Come fare? Se andare per la strada della vita consacrata, la vita religiosa, o studiare per diventare più preparata per aiutare gli altri.
Questo è un conflitto apparente, perché quando il Signore chiama, chiama sempre per fare il bene agli altri, sia alla vita religiosa, alla vita consacrata, sia alla vita laicale, come padre e madre di famiglia.
Ma lo scopo è lo stesso: adorare Dio e fare il bene agli altri. Che cosa deve fare Marina, e tanti di voi che si fanno la stessa domanda? Anch’io l’ho fatta al mio tempo: che strada devo scegliere?
Ma tu non devi scegliere nessuna strada: la deve scegliere il Signore! Gesù l’ha scelta, tu devi sentire Lui e chiedere: Signore, che cosa devo fare? Questa è la preghiera che un giovane deve fare: “Signore, cosa vuoi tu da me?”. E con la preghiera e il consiglio di alcuni veri amici – laici, sacerdoti, suore, vescovi, papi… anche il Papa può dare un buon consiglio – con il consiglio di questi trovare la strada che il Signore vuole per me.

Sono sicuro che il Signore vi ascolterà. Anche te Marina, di sicuro. Grazie per la tua testimonianza. Scusami! Ho sbagliato nome: la domanda è stata fatta da Mai, non da Marina.

Mai ha parlato di un’altra cosa: dei martiri, dei santi, dei testimoni. E ci ha detto con un po’ di dolore, un po’ di nostalgia, che nella sua terra, la Cambogia, ancora non ci sono Santi, ma speriamo... Santi ci sono e tanti! Ma la Chiesa ancora non ha riconosciuto, non ha beatificato, non ha canonizzato nessuno. E io ti ringrazio tanto Mai di questo. Io ti prometto che mi occuperò, quando torno a casa, di parlare all’incaricato di queste cose, che è un bravo uomo, si chiama Angelo, e chiederò a lui di fare una ricerca su questo per portarlo avanti. Grazie, tante grazie!

It’s time to finish. Are you tired? [No!] Go on a little? [Yes!]

Veniamo adesso a Marina. Marina ha fatto due domande… non due domande, ha fatto due riflessioni e una domanda sulla felicità. Lei ci ha detto una cosa vera: la felicità non si compra. E quando tu compri una felicità, poi te ne accorgi che quella felicità se n’è andata… Non dura la felicità che si compra. Soltanto la felicità dell’amore, questa è quella che dura!

E la strada dell’amore è semplice: ama Dio e ama il prossimo, tuo fratello, quello che è vicino a te, quello che ha bisogno di amore e ha bisogno di tante cose. “Ma, padre, come so io se amo Dio?” Semplicemente se tu ami il prossimo, se tu non odi, se tu non hai odio nel tuo cuore, ami Dio. Quella è la prova sicura.

E poi Marina ha fatto una domanda – io capisco – una domanda dolorosa, e la ringrazio di averla fatta: la divisione tra i fratelli delle Coree. Ma ci sono due Coree? No, ce n’è una, ma è divisa, la famiglia è divisa. E c’è questo dolore… Come aiutare affinché questa famiglia si unisca? Io dico due cose: prima un consiglio, e poi una speranza.

Prima di tutto, il consiglio: pregare; pregare per i nostri fratelli del Nord: “Signore, siamo una famiglia, aiutaci, aiutaci per l’unità, Tu puoi farlo. Che non ci siano vincitori né vinti, soltanto una famiglia, che ci siano soltanto i fratelli”. Adesso vi invito a pregare insieme - dopo la traduzione - in silenzio, per l’unità delle due Coree.

In silenzio facciamo la preghiera. In silence we pray. [silenzio]

Adesso, la speranza. Qual è la speranza? Ci sono tante speranze, ma ce n’è una bella. La Corea è una, è una famiglia: voi parlate la stessa lingua, la lingua di famiglia; voi siete fratelli che parlate la stessa lingua. Quando [nella Bibbia] i fratelli di Giuseppe sono andati in Egitto a comprare da mangiare - perché avevano fame, avevano soldi, ma non avevano da mangiare - sono andati lì a comprare cibo, e hanno trovato un fratello! Perché? Perché Giuseppe se n’era accorto che parlavano la stessa lingua. Pensate ai vostri fratelli del Nord: loro parlano la stessa lingua e quando in famiglia si parla la stessa lingua, c’è anche una speranza umana.

Poco fa abbiamo visto una cosa bella, quello sketch del figliol prodigo, quel figlio che se n’era andato, aveva sprecato i soldi, tutto, aveva tradito il padre, la famiglia, aveva tradito tutto. Ad un certo momento, per le necessità, ma con molta vergogna, ha deciso di tornare. E aveva pensato a come chiedere perdono al suo papà. E ha pensato: “Padre, ho peccato, ho fatto questo di male, ma io voglio essere un dipendente, non tuo figlio” e tante belle cose. Ma ci dice il Vangelo che il padre lo ha visto da lontano. E perché lo ha visto? Perché tutti i giorni saliva sul terrazzo per vedere se tornava il figlio. E lo ha abbracciato: non lo ha lasciato parlare; non lo ha lasciato dire quel discorso e neppure chiedere perdono, lo ha lasciato in seguito… e ha fatto festa. Ha fatto festa! E questa è la festa che piace a Dio: quando noi torniamo a casa, torniamo da Lui. “Ma Padre, io sono un peccatore, io sono una peccatrice…”. Meglio ancora, ti aspetta! Farà ancora più festa! Perché lo stesso Gesù ci dice che in cielo si fa più festa per un peccatore che torna che per cento giusti che rimangono a casa.

Nessuno di noi sa cosa ci aspetta nella vita. E voi giovani: “Che cosa mi aspetta?”. Noi possiamo fare cose brutte, bruttissime, ma per favore non disperare, c’è sempre il Padre che ci aspetta! Tornare, tornare! Questa è la parola. Come back! Tornare a casa, perché mi aspetta il Padre. E se io sono molto peccatore, farà una grande festa. E voi sacerdoti, per favore, abbracciate i peccatori e siate misericordiosi. E sentire questo è bello! A me fa felice questo, perché Dio mai si stanca di perdonare; mai si stanca di aspettarci.

Now it is time for me to go. [No!] I look forward to seeing you in these days and speaking to you again when we gather for Holy Mass on Sunday. For now, let us thank the Lord for the blessings of this time together and ask him for the strength to be faithful and joyful witnesses of his love throughout Asia and the entire world.

May Mary, our Mother, watch over you and keep you ever close to Jesus her Son. And from his place in heaven, may Saint John Paul II, who initiated the World Youth Days, always be your guide. With great affection I give you my blessing.
